Wednesday

Good evening! So far this week, we have continued to practice building our number sense through “Number of the Day” and, a new addition to our math routine, Prodigy! Prodigy is an online math program that the students can access both at school and at home. It was a hit in our classroom on Monday! We will use this program to review concepts that we have discussed and practiced in other lessons. In science, we have been delving deeper into our study of hearing and sound. Today we discussed how sound travels through our ears to our brain. We were introduced to numerous new scientific vocabulary terms which we will practice using as we continue with our unit of study. During our literacy block, we have spent time discussing different ways in which we can add descriptive details to our writing. Our goal is to help our readers picture what we are writing about by showing our ideas with detailed descriptions rather than simply telling. We have also been practicing making connecti...

Friday

Today we had our first Flex Friday, what a great way to end the week! During this time, all of the classes and grades joined together to work on a collaborative art project that will be displayed in the Embassy. Stay tuned for more pictures to come! We were also introduced to a new math game that you can try out at home! The game is called “Race to 1000” and targets practice with 3-digit addition. I have included the link to the instructions here https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/FreeDownload/Three-Digit-Addition-and-Subtraction-Race-to-the-Answer-651360 . During science, we were able to try out creating sound using a tuning fork. Ask me what happens when a tuning fork is made to vibrate and then placed in water! Next week, we will continue delving deeper into our unit on hearing and sound. Have a wonderful weekend! Upcoming: Popcorn Day November 28th and 29th If interested, please submit Scholastic book orders no later than next Thursday, November 30th

November 22, 2017 Once again, we have been hard at work this week! In math, we have continually been working on developing our number sense skills and expanding our use of different strategies to solve problems. Each day, we begin with a number of the day which we have been using to answer various questions related to place value. This week we have also continued to practice two and three digit addition through looking at various word problems. Stay tuned for ways to practice these skills at home! I will be adding a few links to the blog under the “math resources” tab later this week. In science, we started a brand new unit on hearing and sound. So far we have been introduced to a few new vocabulary terms including vibration and pitch. Ask me what these words mean and how they are related to hearing and sound! In the next while, we will work to deepen our understanding of these terms by conducting a few experiments to test what we have learned about these terms so far. During...

Our second full week in the classroom together has been off to a busy and productive start! In math this week, we have been reviewing various addition strategies and are warming up to adding three digit numbers with answers up to 1000. In science, we have been wrapping up our unit on rocks and minerals. Today, we were excited to observe how our crystals had grown over the past few days. In social studies, we are learning about what we can do to help protect our world, leading up to Universal Children’s Day on November 20th. Meanwhile, during our literacy block, we have been practicing how to build stamina during our Daily 5 time which we have spent working on writing or reading. We have also been learning about descriptive language and how to write complete sentences. Just a reminder - home reading books should go home each night and come back each day. Students may not always be ready to exchange their book, but remembering to bring the books back and forth is a good habit to get in...

Welcome

Welcome To Grade 3 With Mrs. D’Appolonia! My name is Mrs. D’Appolonia and I am one of the newest staff members at Kenneth D. Taylor. I am so excited and grateful for the opportunity to work alongside such wonderful staff and students! After getting to know the students in the three grade 3 classrooms the past while, I am happy to say that our first full week in the classroom together was a success. I am eager to see what the rest of the school year has in store! In order for you to get to know me better, I wanted to tell you a little bit about myself. This past summer I began my married life and moved from my home in British Columbia to the beautiful city of Calgary. I have to say that the severe weather has been a bit of a shock, but I have been loving the sunshine despite the cooler temperatures. In my spare time, I enjoy spending time in the kitchen, baking and cooking all sorts of dishes. I am also a huge animal lover and try to get outdoors as much as possible to explore n...
