Where did the time go?!  We had a busy week at Ken Taylor School in preparation for the holiday season but it was a success! Our class did a great job today performing their Hot Chocolate dance during the assembly which was followed by a wonderful morning filled with acts of kindness. The grade 3 team delivered thank you cards for the entire school staff, helped out with organizational tasks around the school, and distributed homemade compliment presents to one another.   We also recently tweeted out a smile on Twitter that we hope to spread to all parts of the world. You can help to spread this smile by logging onto Twitter and retweeting the tweet linked below. If you look closely at the smiley face image, you will see the faces of our grade 3 students! https://twitter.com/KenTayloryycbe/status/943176314273415168 Over the break, Razz Kids and Prodigy can be used to help keep literacy and math skills fresh! Hello everyone! As our last week before the holiday's is quickly coming to a close, I thought I would send out a few reminders. In case you haven't yet had a chance to look, the following image shows the festive days that are going on this week and when the performances are taking place! Our class will be performing on Thursday at the assembly beginning at 8:30 am. The choir will also be performing tomorrow morning! Please also ensure that home reading books are brought back to school so that they can be sorted and organized for the new year. Thank you!

Friday

It’s hard to believe that another week has come and gone! We ended our Friday with lunch in front of our cozy fireplace. To find out what we’ve been learning you can ask me: How can a subtraction question be answered using a place value chart? What is identity? How does quality of life differ from person to person? Are all sounds safe for our ears? Updates: Please check the previous blog post for information about the festive days and assemblies that will be occurring next week! Information is also posted on the school website. All library books must be returned next week so that they can be organized before the break! Book exchange will resume after the break. Don’t forget to bring Home Reading books to school each day so that they can be exchanged. I wish everyone a safe and relaxing weekend!

Good evening! I hope all is well. A peek inside our classroom so far this week… In math this week, we began learning a new subtraction strategy using a place value chart. Our understanding of this strategy is coming along! Ask me to show you how it works. We also began ‘Number Talks’. During this time, we practice verbalizing our mental math strategies to strengthen our number sense. This is such an important skill in learning how to use these strategies flexibility in both new and familiar learning situations! During our literacy block today, we brainstormed synonyms for common vocabulary terms that we no longer want to use in our writing. These are ‘Jail Words’. We had fun listing more descriptive synonyms and look forward to using them in our writing! Meanwhile, during science, we have continued our study on hearing and sound. Do you know how sound is produced? How about how sound travels through matter to reach our ears? Ask me to explain. Checkout t...

Good evening! I hope everyone is doing well. To discover what we have been learning this week, ask your child all or a few of the following questions: What is sound? How do we hear? What is your favorite addition strategy? Consistent review of these strategies is very important for proficiency. See the previous blog post for the strategies that we have gone over. The goal is to become proficient with at least one strategy! What does good writing look like? This week we practiced these skills by writing about a place (imagined or real) that we would like to travel to. How can you be a problem solver? Look under the resource tabs on the blog to gain access to some of the websites that we have explored :) Updates: No school this Friday! All library books must be returned by next Friday - we will have our last book exchange before the holidays on Monday (these books too will have to be returned by Friday December 15th) - book exchange will resum...

Friday

It was a beautiful day to end the week! Today we took advantage of the sunshine and got outside to explore how sound travels through different types of matter. We will study this more next week to confirm and expand our observations. We also spent some time today reviewing the addition strategies that are shown in the attached image. Most of us have found at least one strategy that we feel comfortable using but practicing all of the strategies and becoming familiar with them is important as we begin exploring more challenging concepts. The more strategies that we have in our toolkit the better! Addition strategies: Results of our first Flex Friday last week: We are all excited to discover what our next Flex Friday has in store. I wish everyone an enjoyable and restful weekend!
