A peek inside our classroom so far this week…

In math this week, we began learning a new subtraction strategy using a place value chart. Our understanding of this strategy is coming along! Ask me to show you how it works. We also began ‘Number Talks’. During this time, we practice verbalizing our mental math strategies to strengthen our number sense. This is such an important skill in learning how to use these strategies flexibility in both new and familiar learning situations!

During our literacy block today, we brainstormed synonyms for common vocabulary terms that we no longer want to use in our writing. These are ‘Jail Words’. We had fun listing more descriptive synonyms and look forward to using them in our writing!
Meanwhile, during science, we have continued our study on hearing and sound. Do you know how sound is produced? How about how sound travels through matter to reach our ears? Ask me to explain.


Checkout the social studies resource tab for more information on the different countries that we have been researching. We are in the beginning stages of learning how to research and extract important information. This has been a challenge but we are up for it!
Upcoming:
  • Next week is the last week before the break! Thursday (December 21st)  is the official last day for students.
  • Winter celebration performances will be held from Dec 18th - Dec 21st. Please see the attached schedule to determine when your child will be performing.  All families are welcome to attend - ​​​​​​​Schedule.JPG - our class is performing on Thursday Dec 21st at 8:30am - the above link also details the themes that we will be celebrating each day next week.

Good evening! I hope everyone is doing well. To discover what we have been learning this week, ask your child all or a few of the following questions: What is sound? How do we hear? What is your favorite addition strategy? Consistent review of these strategies is very important for proficiency. See the previous blog post for the strategies that we have gone over. Where did the time go?!  We had a busy week at Ken Taylor School in preparation for the holiday season but it was a success! Our class did a great job today performing their Hot Chocolate dance during the assembly which was followed by a wonderful morning filled with acts of kindness. The grade 3 team delivered thank you cards for the entire school staff, helped out with organizational tasks around the school, and distributed homemade compliment presents to one another.   We also recently tweeted out a smile on Twitter that we hope to spread to all parts of the world. Hello everyone! We have been hard at work in our classroom from constructing instruments, practicing multiplication, discussing cultural differences, and practicing writing with transition words to help our ideas flow together. Here's a sneak peek from the past few days... Valentine's Day! Just a quick reminder, students are welcome, but not required, to bring in valentines for their peers tomorrow but please ensure that they include everyone in the class to avoid hurt feelings. See the blog post from Friday for a class list. Students are also welcome to bring in a special snack to eat in the afternoon while we read a story. Due to allergies, we will not be sharing any food.
