Happy Tuesday! I hope everyone is doing well and staying healthy. We've been missing a few of our classmates this week so we are wishing them well and hope to see them back in class soon! We had a great field trip to St. Vladimir's today. From the artifacts, to the dancing, to the historical discussions, there was lots to see and learn about Ukrainian culture! We will continue our work discussing and researching different cultures in the classroom in the coming while. Updates/reminders: - Pink Shirt Day tomorrow - February 28th - Popcorn Day tomorrow and Thursday - February 28th and March 1st - Scholastic order forms were sent home earlier this week - please return by Friday March 16th if you would like to order - there is lots to choose from in the various flyers! - Please continue with home reading and the online programs that are available to our students to strengthen their math skills - IXL and/or Prodigy - see the math tab for the links

Happy Friday! We ended the week with a busy Flex Friday and Fun Lunch. Always a hit with our students! Here are a few examples of the art projects that were completed today... These images will be turned into cards and will be available for purchase within the next while as part of a fundraiser for our school! Updates/reminders: - Field trip on Tuesday February 27th - we will be leaving school shortly after the school day begins so you won't want to be late!  - Popcorn Day February 28th and March 1st - Pink Shirt Day February 28th - IXL information was sent home with the students today - this includes a parent letter explaining the program and the students login information. I encourage the students to use it regularly outside of school. It is aligned with the Alberta curriculum and provides great practice! Prodigy, which we started earlier this year, is still another great option for additional practice. - Book exchange in the Learning Commons on Mo...

Happy Wednesday! We have been hard at work in the classroom this week. Ask me to show you what I've learned about multiplication and to explain what the numbers in a multiplication sentence mean. We have also started the beginning of our building and testing unit in science. Ask me the following to find what I know: - What is an engineer? - Are there different kinds of engineers? - What do all engineers have in common? Reminders: - Field trip forms must be returned with all of the required components filled in preferably by the end of the week! Our field trip is on Tuesday. Students who do not return these forms or are late on the day of the field trip will unfortunately not be able to attend. Our bus leaves shortly after school begins so you don't want to be late! - Fun lunch this Friday - Keep up with home reading! Either a book from school or a book from home will do, the key is to consistently read everyday and to reflect on what the text is about. Profi...

Reminders/Updates

Hello everyone! I hope everyone enjoyed the long weekend and is having an awesome Family Day. Just a few quick reminders/updates: - Please return completed field trip forms as soon as possible! The trip is coming up soon on February 27th. - We are going to be starting a new unit in science focused on building with a variety of materials and testing designs. If you have any toilet or paper towel rolls lying around at home - please send them to school over the next little while. I'm sure that we will be able to make use of them as we will be constructing various structures. Thank you!

Hello everyone! We have been hard at work in our classroom from constructing instruments, practicing multiplication, discussing cultural differences, and practicing writing with transition words to help our ideas flow together. Here's a sneak peek from the past few days... Valentine's Day! Just a quick reminder, students are welcome, but not required, to bring in valentines for their peers tomorrow but please ensure that they include everyone in the class to avoid hurt feelings. See the blog post from Friday for a class list. Students are also welcome to bring in a special snack to eat in the afternoon while we read a story. Due to allergies, we will not be sharing any food. Updates/reminders: - Field trip notice sent home today - please return required forms once completed - No school this Thursday, Friday, or next Monday (February 15th, 16th, and 19th) - Fun lunch on February 23rd - orders must be placed by the 18th - Popcorn days are February...

Happy Friday! I hope everyone has stayed safe and warm this week with all of the snow that we got. Despite the snowstorm, we kept busy in the classroom! The artifacts in the images above are from the Fort Calgary Kit that we are lucky enough to get to explore in our classroom over the next week! With Valentine's Day coming up, I thought I'd share how it works at Ken Taylor. We will celebrate and recognize Valentine's Day on the 14th but this will be done through connections to our curricular areas such as art, math, and language arts. Students are welcome to exchange Valentine's Day cards in the afternoon if they would like to, but they are not required to. If you do decide to make cards, please ensure that each child in the class receives one to avoid hurt feelings. See the list of student and staff names for our classroom below. Due to dietary restrictions, we will not be exchanging any food but your child is welcome to bring a special snac...

Happy Tuesday! A little bit of our week so far... In math, we have continued learning about different multiplication strategies including equal groups, repeated addition, and skip counting. Today we introduced arrays. During our literacy block, we have been practicing writing with transition words through procedural writing. Transition words are meant to help our writing flow. Some examples of transition words are the words "first" "afterwards" and "suddenly". In science, we are wrapping up our unit on hearing and sound. Next week, we will be making instruments! If possible, please send your child to school with recycled materials that we could use to make our instruments. Desired materials include: - small cardboard boxes - cereal, shoe, or tissue box size - empty tin cans - empty milk jugs or other bottles/cups - toilet paper, wrapping paper, or paper towel rolls - string Mystery message! Work with your child to try to solve the my...

Happy Friday! We ended the week with a great assembly put on by our grade 3 students! Ask you child to explain what was discussed at the assembly - ways to make a new friend, how to problem solve, and ways to show kindness. In math this week, we continued to look at multiplication strategies including equal groups, repeated addition, and skip counting. Ask your child to explain what the numbers in the following equation 3 x 5 mean. How do you know how to solve the problem? We also practiced our fluency with multiplication facts through a game called "Rock, Paper, Math". Ask your child to teach you how to play! In science, we applied our knowledge of hearing and sound to various experiments using materials such as elastics, bottles with different amounts of water, and straws. All of the experiments can easily be conducted with materials found around the house. Ask you child to demonstrate how one of these experiments works! Hint: think about the pitch and volume - how ar...
