Hello! It was so nice to meet so many families over the past few days. I know our students were excited to have their work showcased and shared. Remember that you are always welcome to stop by the classroom or send me an email if you have any questions or concerns. I am happy to help! We ended our week in the classroom with an introduction to a few new concepts. In math, we are starting to look at multiplication and will be practicing a few different strategies in the coming while. In social studies, we decided on the name for our classroom micronation - "The Land of Kids" - this is a project that we will be using to look at how different countries around the world operate. In creating this micronation, we will essentially be creating our own country to examine the geography, public services, leadership, and decision-making processes of different countries to make decisions that will offer our micronation citizens the best quality of life. Stop, drop, and ...

Happy Wednesday! A peek inside our classroom so far this week... In math, we finished up reviewing the subtraction strategies that we have learned and will be shifting our focus to multiplication (all the while reviewing what we have learned previously this year). Meanwhile, during our literacy block, we have been learning more about the writing process and how we take our ideas and turn them into a polished piece of writing. Before the holiday's, we were focusing on adding description to our writing. Our focus now is on sentence starters and varied transition words between sentences. In science, we have been reviewing what we know about hearing and sound. We will soon be looking at various instruments and applying our knowledge of hearing and sound to how these instruments work.  We have also been busy preparing for our assembly next week! Updates/reminders: - If you still have report card envelopes at home, please return them. - Home reading books shoul...

Happy Wednesday! A peek inside of our classroom the past few days...   In math, we have been reviewing the subtraction strategies that we have learned through games and word problem discussions. Ask me to explain the process for solving word problems! Checkout: https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Three-Digit-Addition-and-Subtraction-Race-to-the-Answer-651360 to try the math game that we played this week - see Race to Zero. We have also discussed how to check our work using addition. This part is still a particularly challenging concept but we will continue to practice over the next while! In language arts, we discussed writing with different sentence starters. Today, we began reading The Red Bicycle -  great story about how one person's actions can positively impact the lives of others. We have also practiced setting and discussing various literacy related goals through our Daily 5 time. During this time, the students primarily practice reading to s...

Good evening! I hope everyone is doing well.  We started off 2018 in our classroom with a full week of learning! Some of our time was spent reviewing concepts that we touched on before the break but, later in the week, we were introduced to some new ideas. To find out what we have been learning, you may ask: - What is growth mindset? - What does it mean to be a global citizen? - What different types of sentences are there? We have also been learning how to subtract when there is regrouping involved. This can be a tricky concept but we are starting to get the hang of it! We learned this week that when we challenge ourselves, our brains become stronger as we are able to make new connections. The most common errors in subtraction with regrouping arise from incorrect regrouping, incorrect mental math, and subtracting from the bottom instead of the top when regrouping is needed. See the image below for the strategies that we have reviewed! We have also had practice ...

Hello everyone! I hope everyone had a good break. So far this week in our classroom, we have been getting back into the swing of things. We picked up where we left off with subtraction and have continued to learn about hearing and sound. This week, we are looking at how animals hear in comparison to humans! During our literacy block, we have been looking at different types of sentences that we can use in our writing - statements, questions, commands, and exclamations. Ask your child to provide you with an example of each! In social studies, we will be looking deeper into what makes a global citizen and how our actions can have an impact around the world. We have also discussed growth mindset and goal setting to kick off the new year. Each student has set a personal word-goal that they are working towards. We set action steps to achieve these goals and will be assessing our progress in the coming while. Please note: If your child has old home reading books at home,...
